How to Create Pops of Color with Punch Negatives by Izzy Anderson

Today My Creative Scrapbook Design Team member Izzy Anderson is here with our June Creative kit to share how she used the negatives of punches to add a fun pop of color to her layout!

Here's Izzy:

"Hello, everyone! Izzy Anderson here to talk about one of my favorite scrapbooking trends: using the negative of a punch. For this layout of my son zooming his truck across the shore, I used the negatives of a large circle punch (a smaller punch and a larger one).

The top layer of this layout is white cardstock. I punched one large partial circle at the top and two smaller partial circles at the bottom and right side of the cardstock. In each case, I allowed my punch to go off the page. This helps add a sense of movement.

The bottom layer of the layout is blue patterned paper from Echo Park’s collection, A Perfect Summer. In between the blue layer and the white layer, I inserted red woodgrain paper to show in the negative space created by the circle punches.

To give the negative punches a little extra depth, I added stitching along the edges.

Now I have the base for my layout. I tend to create this way: from the outside in. I almost always decide upon the base of my layout and make it first, then fill the rest of the layout with stuff in the middle. Many artists work the opposite way; they start with the focal point and work their way out. Here, I have placed the photos more or less where they will be when the layout is complete. Now the fun part: embellishing the page.

Here’s a close-up of the finished layout. You can see I have filled in the layout with bits of stickers and patterned paper but the red circles remain a dominant design element. I love the fun pop of color they provide.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today and letting me tell you a little about my process. If you’ve made projects with negative punches, you are welcome to link them in the comments. We love seeing your work!"

How to Create a Flower from Trims by Sandie Edwards

To view or purchase our kits, click here.
For our sketch challenge (deadline: July 14), click here.

My Creative Scrapbook Design Team member Sandie Edwards has prepared a flower tutorial featuring our June Limited Edition kit!

Here's Sandie:

"How to create a flower from trims:

1. Using the larger of the two trims in the June Kit, cut off a piece which has 7 points. Double thread a needle with strong quilting cotton, and tie off end well.

2. Run small gathering stitches along the non-pointed edge, as shown in Photograph 2.

3. Pull threads tightly as pictured in Photograph 3, to form flower shape, tie off well on back of flower. Please Note: Tiny stitches aids in getting a nice gather in the flower and it will sit a lot lower, and be less bulky. AND, adding a touch of glue to your knots will keep flowers from unravelling.

4. Use metal elements as shown in Photograph 4 from June’s kit, to create a flower centre. Any embellishment can be used, including buttons, beads, pearls, jewels, etc. for the centre part of flower.

5. Apply to your crafting project (Photograph 5). Please Note: The colour of your flower can be change easily, by using spray mist. You can create flowers which will match ‘any’ craft project."

Using Paint with Kit Elements by Sandie Edwards

For our sketch challenge (deadline: July 14), click here.

My Creative Scrapbook Design Team member Sandie Edwards is sharing several awesome tips for using paint on your layouts featuring our June Limited Edition kit!

Here's Sandie:

"Using paint to change and add colours of various kit elements:

Adding acrylic paint to highlight various elements is an easy process, quick drying, and can change the whole look of projects created.

Chipboard or cardstock embellishments can be re-coloured or highlighted easily by using an acrylic paint dauber as shown in Image One.

Image Two shows how simple it is to add colour to alpha stickers.

Highlighting paper edges (Image Three), especially when papers have been distressed or aged really gives a beautiful soft appearance, and a gold tone, brings out the original paper colours (they still shine through).

Adding a brush of colour to flower petals, can often soften deep or bright colours, and of course when following the previous examples, ties in beautifully colour-wise."

How to Layer a Page in Less Than 45 Minutes by Christin Gronnslett

To view or purchase our kits, click here.
For our sketch challenge (deadline: July 14), click here.

My Creative Scrapbook Design Team member Christin Gronnslett is sharing how she layered her page in less than 45 minutes using our June Limited Edition kit!

Here's Christin:

"Sometimes I am in a hurry but still like to be able to finish a page, then I give myself a time limit. This time I gave myself 45 minutes, but managed to finish it in 40 minutes including taking the pictures.

First start with paper, pick out 5-7 paper from your leftovers.

Try out your layering with a photo on top, move the layers in different order, add and remove things.

When you are happy with your layers use a stapler to staple only the layers together and bend the edges on the papers a little. Use other adhesive to get the smaller pieces to stick in between the layers – like the artisan ribbon.

Adhere the photo to the layering and try out where your flowers will be.

Start stamping and adding small mist droplets randomly. Don’t mind if your stamping doesn’t show too much.

To get more random stamping, do not use an acrylic block, just hold the stamp and push the inked stamp with your finger. It will not be as accurate as with an acrylic block, but you might not get as square feeling all the time and you can control the placement a little.

Tape the back

And voila a finished page in less than 45 minutes. The little trick with layers and with slightly bended corners and no completely straight lines is that with a few layers the layout come more to life.

Some closeups
