Masculine Layout Masking Tutorial by Helen Tilbury

If you struggle with creating masculine layouts, today's tutorial from My Creative Scrapbook Design Team member Helen Tilbury featuring our March Main kit is one that you will want to read.

Here's Helen...

I hear so many people say they struggle to create manly layouts so let me show you how easy it is, even from a kit that looks really pretty!

1. Remember to always keep aside a neutral patterned paper like this one so you can create at least one masculine page per kit.

2. Print out some photos to match. Desaturate them so that you can create a more neutral boyish colour palette.

3. Make use of the elements provided in the kit, that are not especially feminine, like the mask for example.

4. To make use of a 6” mask on a 12” layout you need to ensure that you mask off the edges of the stencil using so place your mask on a piece of 12” white paper (I use the album inserts that come with my page protectors). Place your mask in your chosen position.

5. I chose to centre my mask. Use a ruler & set square, together with your gridded out working mat, to ensure that you position it correctly. Secure with masking tape.

6. Now LIGHTLY score around the edges of your mask with your cutting knife but do NOT cut deeply or you will damage your mask. Now pull & carefully tear away the paper to reveal your mask again.

7. This is the area where your mists will not penetrate & the rest of your page will be protected. Voila! Using a lightbox makes this step easier or just put your page up against a window like I did!

8. Now place your the new 12” mask you have just made OVER your printed paper & mist. I used the Maya Road Charcoal mist provided in one of my My Creative Scrapbook Kits last year.

9. And there you have it! Your masked area is complete! Now all that you have left is to add your photograph & embellish away!!

10. Using your dymo for journaling always adds a heavier, more masculine touch. I still used the glitter thickers though & I think they look great! All the beige papers you see are cut from the PRIMA PACKAGING (from the flowers) so don’t forget to save that! Staples & string are inexpensive masculine elements you can also add.

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial!

Paper Bow Tutorial by Izzy Anderson

Would you like to learn how My Creative Scrapbook Design Team member Izzy Anderson made her darling paper bow on her card featuring our March Creative kit?

Here's Izzy...

Sometimes something simple like a paper bow can be just the right embellishment for a card or layout. This tutorial uses scraps of paper I had leftover from the kit.

Cut three strips of paper the same width but different lengths. I cut mine these lengths: 5.5 inches, 4.5 inches and 3.5 inches. You can adjust the lengths longer or shorter depending on the size bow you want. All pieces should be the same width, however. In the longest strip, notch each end. This will be the base of the bow.

Take each of the two shorter strips and form a circle with each by placing (and adhering) the ends together. Press the circles down in the middle and secure. I secured them with stitching but adhesive would work too.

Layer the smallest circle on the larger one and place them in the middle of the notched strip. I punched a small scallop circle from patterned paper and put it on top. Then I used a hole punch to go through the center of all the layers and added a brad in the center.

To curl the edges of the bow, I wrapped them around a pencil. When I released the ends from the pencil, the bows maintained a slight curl.

Layout Background Technique by Carla Marchee

If you're looking for a day full of creative tips and techniques, you're in the right place!  My Creative Scrapbook Design Team member Carla Marchee has several ideas for you featuring our March kits, and we'll be posting them throughout the day.

Here's Carla...

Here's my first layout using the March Limited Edition Kit: Love, Live, Hope

What I have done with this design I will please tell: Let's get started!

Here I have tearing the design paper When you tear toward yourself with the design part of the paper facing you, you will get a course edge that shows the core of the paper. If the core of the paper is white, you get the white edge.

And layering this how you like it.

What I did next: Using the glue with brush, paint a thin coat over the paper, making sure all the edges are stuck down. This will dry clear.
when this is dry. next step:

Now I have just gesso and water    Gesso is like a magic bullet. Seriously. Gesso should be in your craft room….there is no doubt about it! If my Mixed Media
So I get further

1} I did what gesso in a bowl and some water there at.
why because I wanted the pattern paper to show through.

2} And paint with the brush on the page
See picture's

3} Than I have just a color and painted over the page

And this was my background, so I further layered with the design paper and did fussy cutting and finish the page used the Prima packaging and flowers, ribbon.
