Step by Step Layout Tutorial by Becky Litz

Hello friends!

Becky here to show you the steps to how I put my Road Trip Selfie layout together.

I started off with a base of Kraft cardstock and then layered the diagonal rainbow stripe, the wood grain, the clouds and the pink scalloped papers. I made sure to use a piece of the woodgrain paper that had a diagonal that was the opposite of the diagonal on the rainbow stripe.

On top of that I placed a mat of the red heart paper and tucked one of the clear frames just under the right side. I adhered the clear frame with adhesives under where the yellow frame is so that you can't see it.

Next I stuck my photo down and attached another fun clear overlay on top of it to get the cute dots down the right side of the photo. I used small glue dots underneath some of the colored dots on the clear overlay so that it would stay stuck over the photo but you wouldn't see the glue.

Here's a close up of that...can you see where I glued it on?

Next I layered the word 'selfie' using letter stickers from the kit on top of the peach hashtag diecut and attached it so it overlaped the photo and the yellow frame. I layered the I {heart} summer sticker next and then cut a three blue hearts from the rainbow heart border sticker and layered it over the other items.

The 'ROAD TRIP' diecut and the awesome bus diecut went on next. I don't know how well you can read it in the photo but the bus says 'road trip' on the door. I attached the bus so that it covered up the word summer on the I {heart} summer sticker because I wanted to add another layer there...you'll see that in a minute.

Below the bus I fussy cut the banner from a piece of patterned paper and tucked it under the wheels of the bus. I also fussy cut out the other road trip sign from a piece of patterned paper and tucked that under as well.

As an after thought I realized that I needed a little something more at the top of my cluster of embellishments and so I cut the windmill sticker out and attached it so it was sticking out from the road trip sign. I put some baby powder on the points of windmill so that they would not stick to the page and bent them up to give it a little dimension rather than being a flat sticker.

And remember how I covered up the word 'summer' before? Well I replaced it with another word summer that I fussy cut from the chalkboard paper.

To anchor the page and create some balance I added another little cluster of embellishments to the bottom left corner of my photo. I used the camera diecut, layered on top of a circle I punched out of the woodgrain paper. I then layered some more of the rainbow heart border sticker with the word #summertime that I fussy cut out of the chalkboard paper, and finally a little word sticker.

So there you have it...my completed layout. I added a little journaling below the pink scalloped paper and it is complete!

I hope you enjoyed watching how I put this layout together. I'd love to see what you create with your Creative Kit this month! Make sure to share your projects on our FB page.

Lots of Creative Journaling Ideas by Lydell Quin

Welcome to the Blog today!
Here is my table set up for my Project Life stage of my creating this month.  I am a little behind, so I am trying to get as much done with my supplies this month as I can.

So with this in mind, I am sharing a few tips I find useful doing Project Life, especially when you are behind, and you are trying to get the very most out of your kits!

I love journaling.  I love words.  I love telling the story.  Project Life Style recording is perfect for story telling and in a format that reads a little like a family journal or Diary of sorts.  It records our stories of our life in pictures and in words.  It is sometimes a challenge however, finding the places to write in the limited spaces left, after we add photos.  Journal cards, blocks, stamps and labels are great for this.  I find you can never have enough and it is often necessary for me to make my own to match the papers I am using in the kits.

Often times when you are using Patterned Paper, the pattern is just too busy to add your journaling to, so you need something to adhere on top that matches, while still keeping with the cohesive embellishing in each cards design.  Not always an easy thing to do.  But I have some Ideas!

Cut a strip of Patterned paper and staple it to the top of one of your cut out labels.  Add pen lines and your journaling.

Swipe a matching paint colour onto your paper and use that as a journaling strip....This makes a 'stage' for your words.

Here are some other ideas pictured below.

Simple white on top of patterned paper (described above.)

The arrow journaling bars, very effective and points to the focal point of your journaling.....  Really cool!

One of my most favourites is strip journaling.  Just love it as a design element of my cards too!

Rounded corner labels layered and stapled.  And journaling around a frame.
Great way to fit the story in places it might not normally fit.

Rounded corners and edged with washi tape, then stapled.  Faux pen lines to finish off....Really sweet!

The flag.  Can be any size any width, to fit your space.

Cutting a strip with freehand scallops and adhering right below or above the photo.  Journal right onto it.

Patterned paper cut a little taller than your white journaling strip.  Layer together.
Add staples for more interest.

Journal directly to card design, following border of image or shape.  Great way to journal on there, without greatly impacting the image or the card design.  It blends right in.

Flag with washi tape again, just larger.

Other ideas......

Journal directly onto dead space on your photo.  Just use a pen for slick surfaces in either white or black

Journal around the border of your Photo

Journal around the entire perimeter of your card.

Die cut blank shapes and use them as journaling cards.

Journal within a pattern of your Cards.  ie look for zig zags, or lines on your paper.

adhere a flap to the top of your journaling card and use the flap as hidden, interactive journaling.

hunt up your journaling stamps in your stamp stash and use them with ink colours to match your spread

I am sure there are many many more ideas, but these are just some I used to complete the spreads using this months kit.  So that's me for the day!  Hope this sparked some ideas for journaling on your next spread!

Have a good one!

How to Create a Gesso Alpha Background by Guest Designer Kristine Davidson

Guest Designer Kristine Davidson is up today with a tutorial featuring our August Main Kit!

--------------------

I will be the first to admit that creating tutorials scares me. Seriously, i find it terrifying LOL! i 'm not sure why -- maybe you'll try what i tried and go.. what was she thinking !!  but today, i'm sharing something i just recently tried and maybe you'll enjoy it ;-)

First I used the Thickers  from the My Creative Scrapbook Main Kit, a piece of cardstock, gesso, paint brush, water brush and  gelatos.

Step 1 :
Place your thickers in a random order or create your own message on a piece of cardstock. Take an old brush and add gesso to your alphas.

Let it dry overnight.

Step 2:
The next day take out some gelatos or watercolor paints and add them to your page. Rub on different colors to your alphas - as much or as little as you like,

I added a few selected colors to match the pattern paper i was using
 - Blue, Red and Green. I didn't add a lot of color, i just wanted a hint of it.

Step 3:
After letting it dry for a few minutes
- the colors showed up nicely on my background

Step 4:
I added some messy sewing on my page and
started adding some papers and embellishments.

Overall it was a great first trial to my { Gesso Alpha Background } Something i'll probably try again to use up some of those thickers!

Hope you enjoyed this today and looking forward to seeing your projects ;-)

How to Make Die Cuts Work for your Project by Kristin Greenwood

Kristin Greenwood is up today with some tips for using the die cuts that are included our August Creative Kit:

--------------------

This month in the Creative Kit there is a package of American Crafts die cuts.  As awesome as these die cuts were, they just were not going to work with the photos that I wanted to use!  So I needed to come up with a creative way to add them to my projects!

Since it was just the design that would not work, I decided to just flip them around and use the back side!  The shapes were perfect!
I had to trim some off the arrow here to get the shape I wanted!

I just adore the surf board on this layout!

I added some of the stickers from the kit on the road sign shape!

The arrow was perfect for an extra layer!

Here are the completed layouts!
