Creative Uses of Stamps by Guest Designer Wendy Antenucci

Guest Designer Wendy Antenucci is up today with some terrific tips for using the stamps that come in our August Main Kit! Here's Wendy:

So you're not a stamper!

When I received my kit there was the stamp set from MME included, now I don't stamp, but I didn't want to not attempt to try everything in the kit. Hmmm so what was I to do with this stamp set? As I looked at the stamp set I realized that there was a great leafy piece included and it looked just like seaweed! This was the inspiration for my layout Love this Life.

I began creating my seaweed by pulling my inks that were similar in color to the green paper in the kit and stamping multiple pieces. Tip: For better images place a mouse pad under your stamping area.

I then began fussy cutting each of the leafy pieces. This for my is probably my most used element and you will find some fussy cutting on every layout I make. I use a Fiskar finger knife which gives me great control.

I then began laying out my layout; I wanted a beachy feel and cheesecloth adds great beachy texture. I grabbed some that I had laying in my box that I had previously sprayed with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Wheatfield and pulled and stretched until it fit beside my picture in a way that I liked. I also tore my cardstock to give a cloud feel to my layout and soften the lines. The white cardstock was a little bright for what I wanted so I misted the top of the page with Prima's new mist to soften the area.

I then piled my seaweed randomly in a pile to match my picture. What do you think? Does it look like seaweed?

I added in a sticker on a stick to imitate the signs you see at the beach.

Some clouds punched with my Fiskar punch and inked with a light blue added to the top of the page to give the feeling of wide open space.

A few pieces of seaweed on the bottom of the layout to tie everything together. Don't be afraid to throw in pops of color to spice up your layout - the red wasn't at all part of my design, but it added energy to my page without clashing.

Have an empty spot but your layout is complete as a design? Add a few lines and journal! I added my sons age and a heart (pop of red) for a little more interest.

But, what if you don't have beach pictures? What else can you do with the stamp set if you aren't a stamper?

Use the leftover seaweed to finish up your trail of flowers forming a diagonal line and tapering the end of your design.

Here's another stamp that I chose to use as my journaling and again to add to my design without making it too heavy.

How to Color Patterned Paper with Gelatos by Joan Bronson

Joan Bronson is sharing a fun technique featuring our August Creative Kit!

Here's Joan:

This months Creative kit inspired me to try out Gelatos! I've owned a few for at least a year; even played around with them a tiny bit; but I really didn't know what to do with them and was afraid to give them a try. I'm guessing you might have some tools in your stash that you feel the same way about.

So what finally convinced me to give it a try? My good friend and fellow design team member Kristin Greenwood recently made a layout using Gelatos. Her demonstration convinced me to give it a try. That along with the perfect piece of paper in the Creative kit was all the inspiration I needed. Yes, this is my tutorial but she really deserves the credit for this tutorial because she is the one who taught me about Gelatos.

Here is the Creative kit paper I started wih:

I was able to change the look by using Gelatos, a little water, and a paint brush.

Gelatos remind me of crayons only much creamier and water-soluble. There are many different ways to use them. This month I used a very simple technique.

First, I chose the colors I wanted to use on my paper; grabbed a paint brush, paper towel, and small dish of water. I colored a little Gelato on my craft mat (don't push too hard or you will get chunks of Gelato rather than a creamy base) then lightly wet my brush. Depending on how wet your brush is and/or how dark you want your color to be you might add more or less water to your brush. If your brush is too damp use your paper towel to dry it a bit.

Use the wet brush to pick up the Gelato color off the craft mat then color your paper just as I did. My brush wasn't too wet so my paper didn't take long to dry. When I first started I didn't think the color was showing up much but as it dried the color really set in. Still, there were a few parts of the paper I went over again because I felt the color was too light. Here is my finished layout and a close up!

I have to admit, being a member of the My Creative Scrapbook kit club has really inspired me to use scrapbook paper in whole new way as well as inspire me to try out new techniques and tools. I love it! I hope you do too!

Step by Step Layout Tutorial by Elizabeth Hellum

Hello there, Elizabeth here to show you today a step-by-step layout and its process! I loved this kit and all the different elements in it. I was able to really go a different way with each layout I created and this time around, I fussy cut some flowers to create this beautiful layout!

Directions:

Fussy cut the flowers from the EP We Are Family Family Floral papers. You can use as many as you'd like! Once cut put aside.

Cut your papers to select size and place upon background papers.
Place dolie on to paper.

After all the papers are down, you can place and arrange your fussy cut flowers on to your page.

Once you have the desired affect, you can adhere them down on to paper.
Then you can add the Prima flowers for more texture and pop.
To center the flowers down, I added the MME decorative buttons for the center of a couple of flowers.

I wanted to tie in the black from the flowers so I added the ribbon from the kit as well as backing the entire layout with some black bazzill cardstock.

I usually don't add my photo(s) until I am almost finished with my layout. I decided to use one photo this time around and then added a few more elements from the kit to tie it all in.

As you can see I kept this layout pretty simple because I wanted the flowers to speak for the layout itself and the photo. I think it's a beautiful layout, just like my subject!!! Go cut some fussy flowers too!

New Design Team Member
Lynn Shaffer
A little about me, I am the proud mommy to 3 beautiful children, whom are the inspirations for almost all of my layouts. I am married to the love of my life Dave, who supports me and my addiction to paper. I am energetic, bubbly and a little on the fun crazy side. As well, I have been fortunate to be surrounded by an amazing set of ladies who have enabled me and my love of crafting. Recently I have begun to teach classes at my local scrapbooking store SGD. I also work full time as a pricing analyst for 3M Canada.

I began scrapbooking in the summer of 2009 during my second maternity leave. My goal, originally, was to document my kids, their growth and preserve those precious memories. But I soon fell in love with the creative process, and my pages will have a lot of hidden journaling. My style is … well I have various styles from a clean to linear to shabby chic, I am now getting into mix media. From a creative perspective, I love inking, layering, distressing, masking, fussy cutting, matting, stamping and.. ok there is not too much I don’t like to do. Sketches play a huge part of my creative process. I find scrapbooking and crafting very calming and therapeutic. I am a paper hoarder. I will be honest. Papers are my passion. I have a hard time using it at times, so I buy double. Ok who am I kidding, if I see, I will love it, and smell it, and drool over it and then hide it in the special paper drawer to oogle over it later.

We have terrific guest designers this month!

Guest Designer
Brenda Cazes

Hi everyone! My name is Brenda Cazes. I live in Alberta, Canada and have been married to my best friend for 20 years. We have two adorable little boys who are the stars of my scrapbooks.

I began scrapbooking in 2006 after going on a Caribbean cruise. Unfortunately, I dropped my camera into the ocean on the last day of our vacation and lost all of our photos. I still have nightmares about it! Luckily, we had friends with us and I was able to use some of their photos. By the time my first son was born in 2007, I was completely addicted to this wonderfully therapeutic hobby.

I would describe my scrapbook style as clean, layered, and whimsical. I love bright, fun colors and no layout is complete without machine stitching, buttons or twine. I’ve been fortunate enough to be published several times in Canadian Scrapbooker magazine and Scrapbook & Cards Today.

Returning Guest Designer
Kristine Davidson

Kristine Davidson lives in New Brunswick, Canada. She works full time as a sales and service agent for an airline company and loves to spend her spare time creating. She also loves anything chocolaty, city skylines, and sunsets.

Kristine has been an avid scrapbooker for over 7 years and addicted to pop dots, diecuts and of course pattern paper. She is the founder of a scrapbook sketch site called Creative Scrappers, and currently a design team member for Jillibean Soup and Simple Stories. She is thrilled to be our guest designer this month and looking forward to providing you with some inspiration to create!

Guest Designer
Wendy Antenucci

Hi my name is Wendy Antenucci and I am from FL. I am married to my wonderful hubby of 14 years and we have 6 kids, ranging from 12-11 months. I started scrapbooking shortly after my first child was born in 2002. I am a SAHM and homeschooler so I tend to scrap during my kids rest time; it helps clear my mind and get me through the rest of the day. My style has developed, over the years, until I am confidant to say I am a scrapper that adores white space with lots of layers and I am always on the lookout for the perfect way to embellish my pages that connect with the memory I am telling. I design for Bella Blvd and Simple Stories. I have been published in Creating Keepsakes, Cards, Create, Scrapbook Trends, Scrap365, PaperCrafts & Scrapbooking, Scrapbook & Cards Today and various online publications.
